Frequently Asked Questions
No, we are solely a mobile optometry clinic and we do not have a physical office for you to come into. Our address is for mailing purposes only.
Although we would like to help you, we need to reserve our services only for those who have mobility or health challenges that would prevent them from getting to a regular eye clinic. If you are able to go into a traditional optometry clinic, we would advise you to do so for your eye exam.
If the patient lives in a care home, it is not mandatory for any family member or caregiver to attend the exam. We will coordinate scheduling with the care home staff and our optometrists will contact the resident’s appointed contact to discuss the exam results afterwards. If the patient lives in a private residence and the patient is not able to let our optometrist into the residence due to their limited mobility, we will need someone there to assist with this.
Yes, we can still perform an eye exam if the patient cannot verbally communicate. Most of the time, there is still a lot of objective testing that can be done to check the health of the eyes and prescription without needing to have the patient respond.
If the patient cannot speak English, please ensure that there is someone present who can help translate.
EYE EXAMS
Yes. We provide prescription eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses. Our team will bring a selection of frames to you for you to choose and make sure they fit your face before sending them off to be made and having them delivered back to you.
If you purchased your glasses through us, and depending on how they are broken, we may be able to help you with the repair. Please send a photo of your glasses and where it is broken to us at admin@mobileeyes.ca and we’ll get back to you on whether they can be repaired.
GLASSES
Most optometry clinics will charge you a fee for an eye exam. The fee that we charge for our eye exams covers the cost of organizing mobile clinics and having our team of optometrists and optical assistants come to you.
MSP provides limited coverage for optometric services. Depending on your age, medical necessity, the type of exam being done, MSP will only cover a portion of the fee. The remainder of the exam fee is billed to the patient.
Children aged 0-18 years: MSP will cover a portion of the eye exam
Adults aged 19-64 years: MSP will not cover any portion of the eye exam unless medically necessary
Seniors aged 65+ years: MSP will cover a portion of the eye exam
We require pre-payment information (e.g. credit card info, e-transfer, cheque) to secure an appointment before we come to you, but we will not complete the billing until after the exam is complete. Due to the nature of our mobile clinics, our doctors and optical assistants come to you solely to focus on your eye exam; they do not handle billing. Because of this, we need to ensure your preference in billing is handled prior to the visit.
We do not bill third party insurance providers, but we can provide you with a receipt for you to submit to your provider for reimbursement.
If the care home you reside in allows it, we can directly bill the eye exam to your comfort account. However, some care homes do not allow this, in which case we will need to bill the patient directly. Please check with our team to see if your specific care home allows direct comfort account billing.
Yes, we can directly bill trust companies. Many of our patients have finances that are handled by a trust company such as The Bloom Group (TBG) or the Public Guardian and Trustee of BC (PGT). When filling out our intake and consent forms, please indicate which trust company is handling your finances, your specific case worker, and the case worker’s contact information in the billing information section. Alternatively, please let our office staff know at the time of scheduling an appointment.
If you are a ministry patient, you receive assistance for routine eye exams once every two years and may have a portion of your eye exam covered. You may also be eligible for some coverage for new eyeglasses; however, the exact amount is dependent on what type of lenses you need. We will not be able to provide you with an estimate of your eyeglass coverage without determining which lenses you need with an eye exam. We will need to verify your ministry coverage with your BC Services Card prior to booking an appointment.
We are not able to bill the NIHB program directly, but we can provide you with a receipt for you to submit for reimbursement.
We are not able to bill Medavie Blue Cross (VAC’s claims administrator) directly, but we can provide you with a receipt for you to submit for reimbursement.
